Uma nova She-Ra e as transformações da representação feminina em séries animadas

Abstract

The changes in society arising from social movements found in the media a way to establish themselves even more in the collective daily life. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is a reboot of a 1985 cartoon, She-Ra: The Princess of Power, which carries in its basic structures, such as narrative and animation, transformations of symbols already established in the previous version. Understanding these alterations between the two cartoons and how social movements, mainly the feminist movement, participate in these changes is the objective of this work. A film analysis was carried out to understand the basic components of the two audiovisual works, making it possible to carry out a comparative study and define a set of signs that are similar between the two works, in order to understand, with the use of applied semiotics, how these same signs behave in both versions and, based on their differences, how their new meanings present in each of the narratives manage to establish themselves with the audience. Therefore, it was important to understand the power exerted by the media in society, to consider the historical context of the feminist movement and, mainly, to understand the changes in the representation of female protagonism in cartoons over the years. Through the analysis, it was possible to identify the signs of the feminist movement in the changes in the meanings present in She-Ra and the princesses of power and to consider the importance of the rereading in the reconstruction of a character so relevant in pop culture.
