Moradia e patrimônio: o papel do tombamento na luta social dos moradores da Vila Vicentina

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the issue faced by the residents of Vila Vicentina da Estância in their legal battle to turn the village into a heritage site of the city of Fortaleza, in light of the possibility of its demolition to make way for large developments in the Dionísio Torres neighborhood. The objective is to understand how the residents are using the tool of heritage preservation to fight for their access to dignified housing. The analysis is based on a literature review, analysis of legal documents, and examination of news articles addressing the issue of Vila Vicentina. A qualitative, descriptive methodology was employed. The results show how the process of designating a cultural heritage site and the practice of preserving it can be used not only to safeguard a part of the local history but also as a catalyst for a more inclusive society through the struggle for the right to housing.
