Abstract: The malate-aspartate shuttle allows the hydrogen ions of the cofactor NADH produced in the cytosol to reach the electron transport chain in the mitochondria and generate energy. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of oral L-glutamine and the stable dipeptide, l-alanyl-glutamine, on the expression of the mitochondrial key enzymes of the malate-aspartate shuttle in rat distal small intestine on 30 minutes of ischemia followed by 30 minutes of reperfusion. In order to demonstrate the possible changes in (malate desidrogenase) MDH 1, 2 and (aspartate desidrogenase) GOT 1, 2 in the rat intestine tissues, the mRNA levels for those enzymes were analyzed by real-time PCR. Results showed that although there were fluctuations in tissue MDH and GOT values of the samples assessed with glutamine versus L-alany-glutamine supplementation versus a calcium caseinate supplementation, no significant differences were observed
