Abstract: | The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of Bacillus subtilis in producing biosurfactant by submerged fermentation and study the application of this tensoative on bioremediation. Bacillus subtilis LAMI005 strain was isolated from the tank of Chlorination at the Wastewater Treatment Plant on Campus do Pici in Federal University of Ceará. In optimal conditions, this microorganism produces surfactin, which is an efficient tensoative. In this work, glucose and fructose were used as carbon source, which are the mainly components of the cashew apple juice. Around 460 mg.L-1 of surfactin was produced, which promoted a reduction in the superficial tension of the fermented broth free of cells of about 57%. The stability of biosurfactant produced against high concentrations of NaCl (from 0 to 20% m/v) and temperature was studied. Also, the capacity of Bacillus subtilis of degrading petroleum was evaluated. The biosurfactant presented itself as a good alternative to be used in bioremediation since it was stable at high concentrations of NaCl, at high temperatures and it seemed to contribute to the degradation of petroleum. |
