Entre modéstia e vaidade: a relação das mulheres da Igreja Batista Regular da Fé, em Fortaleza- CE, com as vestimentas

Abstract

Clothing is a non-verbal language of symbols, it communicates the aspirations, the desires to be and to appear to be and establish itself as a means of expressing identity. For women of the Regular Baptist Church of the Faith, it represents notions of spirituality where what one is wearing reflects fidelity to Christian precepts and doctrines. To do so, women should dress modestly, covering their bodies and seeking not to draw attention to themselves. In this way, this research has as main objective to understand the dichotomy between the modesty and vanity that are reflected in the dress of the women of the Baptist Regular church of the Faith in Fortaleza, in the morning and nocturnal cults. The work had as a methodology the bibliographic research, fundamental for the construction of the theoretical basis, later the qualitative research that was given through semi-structured interviews with five women from 15 to 40 years and finally the documentary research through photographs taken from the clothes in the two moments of worship. Based on the interviews, it was possible to observe that the women dressed more ornamentally in the evening service because they were motivated by the desire to adapt to the more formal atmosphere of the cult. The standardization of proper Christian attire is constantly reinforced, whether by the means of sermons, looks, or comment from other siblings.
