Abstract

This article is the result of twelve years of research with workers in four fishing villages located in the state of Pernambuco. Based on ethnographic research, the present paper intends to answer the following question: what are the decisive social-cultural expressions for the fisherman in practical and symbolic terms? It can be highlighted, therefore, that the process of becoming a fi sherman reveals itself, as an important socio-cultural dynamics, in his work culture, partnership, feeling of corporation and in the sheet knowledgement that has natural cycles, water management and technical and technological practices developed through the years
