Resumen en portugués brasileño: In the earty 1950's Maurice Duverger wrote a systematic work in which he sketched a preliminary general theory of political parties (Duverger 9, Preface). Another major work was published in the same period by Sigmund Neumann in which he attempted to offer a theoretical frame of reference for the comparative study of parties in underdeveloped countries. Latin American political parties, for exemple, were classified and defined by Duverger as "archaic and prehistoric types", charactel" ized by "followers grouped around an influentlal protector, clans formed around a feudal family, camarillas united by military leader" (Duverger 9, p. 3). Neumann's conceptualization on the other hand, did not deny the existence of parties in Latin America, although he did not voice any contrary opinion to the limitation imposed by Duverger's formulation. His views of the "contradictory" one- party system of Latin America, as represented by the Mexican model, were baised in so far, as "one mlght recognize the opposition
