Análise crítica de traduções literárias: limites e possibilidades segundo Katharina Reiss

Abstract

This article presents criteria and procedures for performing critical reviews of translations (translation criticism) in light of the work done by the German author Katharina Reiss (1986; 2004). From a tripartite system formed by the literary, linguistic and extralinguistic categories, Reiss first shows how important it is that the translation critic recognizes the textual typology of the source text (ST) that will be compared to the target text (TT). In this first step, the author relies on the functions of language developed by Bühler (1979). Reiss highlights the value of four components listed in the linguistic category: grammatical, semantic, lexical and stylistic components. Finally, Reiss points out the need for the translation critic to investigate through an accurate comparison between ST and TT the behavior of the seven extralinguistic determinants that she developed: the immediate situation, the subject matter, the time factor, the placefactor, the audience factor, the speaker factor, and the affective implications. After a brief discussion on this theoretical framework elaborated by Reiss, we present in this work examples extracted from Thomas Mann's STDer Tod in Venedig and its Brazilian version (TT), A MorteemVeneza, by Maria Deling. The main objective of this article is to show the feasibility and advantages of using a scientifically substantiated critical translation analysis.
