| Abstract in Brazilian Portuguese: | A escola tem a função de socializar os indivíduos, imprimindo cultura e valores morais, além de transmitir os conhecimentos científicos acumulados pela humanidade e preparar as pessoas para trabalhar e contribuir para o desenvolvimento da sociedade. No entanto, durante muito tempo, esse conhecimento científico foi reservado para os homens oriundos de famílias abastadas, e não havia uma instituição promotora do saber nos moldes como conhecemos hoje. Durante séculos, no Brasil, a escola também foi reservada para a elite e só recentemente passou a ser obrigatória a todas as pessoas entre 4 e 17 anos de idade, que devem estar matriculadas na educação básica, no ensino fundamental ou no ensino médio. Assim, devido à sua grande importância, é necessário entender a história da educação brasileira para compreender sua atual configuração. |
| Abstract: | The school has as its goals to socialize the individuals, develop the culture and moral values, and transmit the scientific knowledge accumulated by humankind, trying to prepare people to work and contribute for the development of society. However, for a long time, this scientific knowledge was reserved for men come from wealthy families, and there was no formal institution to promote this kind of knowledge as it happens today. For centuries in Brazil, schooling was reserved for the elite and only recently it became mandatory for all the people between the age of 4 and 17. They must be enrolled from the elementary to high school. Thus, due to its great importance, it is necessary to know the history of the Brazilian education to understand its current configuration. |
