Análise da legendagem do filme Cidade de Deus: localização, domesticação e estrangeirização como estratégias de tradução audiovisual para a língua inglesa

Abstract

This research investigates the occurrence of domestication and foreignization in the subtitling of the film City of God, directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, using Lawrence Venuti's theory. This documentary study analyzes excerpts from the film that present idiomatic expressions and Brazilian slang, comparing the original versions in Portuguese with the English subtitles. The analysis reveals a tendency towards domestication in the English translation, with the replacement of idiomatic expressions and slang for more generic equivalents, aiming to facilitate comprehension for the Anglophone audience, although this may result in the loss of cultural nuances. The research concludes that the translation prioritized domestication, adapting the language for the Anglophone audience, which resulted in the loss of some cultural nuances and the richness of the original language, contributing to the field of audiovisual translation by offering insights into translation choices and their impacts on the interpretation of the film
