dc.description.abstractIt is usual, in France as well as in the United States, to oppose Marx and Weber as two incompatible and contradictory paradigms in the social sciences. Inspite of their differences, both shareavision of modern capitalism as a system where impersonal and "reítied" relations replace personal relations of dependence and in which capital accumulation becomes largely an irrational end in itsell. Their interpretations of the origins of capitalism are, none the less, quite different. While Marx insists on the importance of violence in the primitive accumulation of capital - without ignoring the association between protestantism and capitalism - Weber emphasizes the decisive role of the elective affinily between the protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism. In only two passages of his Protestant Elhics, dealing with the genesis of capitalism in North America, there is a polemic against historical materialismpt_BR

dc.description.abstract-ptbrOna I'habitude, aussi bien en France qu'aux USA, d'opposer Weber et Marx comme deux paradigmes contradictoires et incompatibles dans les sciences sociales. Or, malgré leurs dillérences indéniables, ils ont beaucoup un commun: ils partagent une vision du capitalisme moderne comme un systême ou les relations impersonnelles et -réiüées- remplacent les relations personnelles de dépendance, et ou I'accumulation du capital devient une lin en soi, largement irrationnelle. Leurs interprétations de I'origine du capitalisme sont, par contre, assez différentes: tandis que Marx insiste sur I'importance de Ia violence dans I'accumulation primitive du capital- sans ignorerles liens entreprotestantisme et capitalisme - Weberattribue un rôle decisil à I'affinité éléctive entreI'éthique protestanteet I'esprit du capitalisme. Seulementdeuxpassagesde sonElhique protestante, concernant Ia genêse du capitalisme en Amérique du Nord, ont une intention polémique contre le matérialisme historique.pt_BR
