Gênese, manifestação e outorgação do realismo grotesco em o médico e o monstro

Abstract

The current thesis focuses on analyzing Robert Louis Stevenson’s book, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (2023a), as to determine the construction and representation of the grotesque reality inside this romance. Basing itself on the studies and thoughts of Mikhail Bakhtin about the Poliphony and the Grotesque, this thesis aims to understand how the grotesque visionary surges throughout the aforementioned book, which is built from a monologic construct of voices, that endowed in their hierarchical power, determined by their social position – establishing them as superiors in comparison to the “other” – bestow Edward Hyde as a grotesque being, a concept that expands throughout the book into its spaces and other characters, turning these into one of the essential pillars of Stevenson’s creation. Therefore, by analyzing the grotesque in this romance, the focus is on understanding which resources, literary or not, were used to enforce this conception, as well as how it relates to the historical period it inserts itself. Taking into account what was analyzed, the grotesque does not reside only in the interior of the person who is called a monster, Edward Hyde, with him being a representation of what exists in the interior of Victorian society. The degeneration does not start with the “other”, but in fact, in the core of those who self-proclaimed themselves to be superior beings.
