Desempenho competitivo entre agricultura familiar e patronal no semiárido e não semiárido do nordeste brasileiro

Abstract

This objective work identified the determinants of the competitiveness of family and employer agriculture in the Brazilian Northeast. Specifically, agricultural competitiveness is measured through the Competitive Performance Index for Agriculture in the Northeast (IDCAN); grouped municipalities with similar characteristics and related competitiveness factors to the resources of rural development policies aimed at family farming. The techniques of factor analysis, cluster analysis and canonical correlations were used. The evidence indicates that the majority of northeastern municipalities have a low and very low level of competitive agricultural performance, with employer-based agriculture having a higher performance than family farming. However, the best results for family farming are in the municipalities of the semi arid region of Rio Grande do Norte. On the other hand, municipalities in Maranhão reached the lowest levels of competitiveness. We noticed that there is no positive and significant association between the competitive performance factors of family farming and the financial resources of rural development policies.
