Pluto é rico, quando a riqueza enxerga novamente: estudo e tradução de Pluto de Aristófanes

Abstract

Aristophanes' comedy Wealth, the final extant one by this playwriter, was first produced in the year 388 BC, bringing formal innovations such as decreased participation of the chorus, and in relation to the subject, which was no longer the war, but the economy. The comedy, in its first part, deals with the god of wealth's cure of his blindness, healed by the god Asclepius, and planned by a farmer, Chremylus, with the help of his servant, Carion, who shares the role of hero with his master, so that Plutus would bring wealth to those who were righteous. In the second part, when the god regains his sight, some repercussions take place: the presentation of the Golden Age at Chremylus' house, after Plutus' healing; the first two visitors: a Just man and an Informer; the second pair of visitors: an Old woman and Young man; later, the god Hermes, welcomed by Carion; finally comes the Priest of Zeus, who resists but leads the god's procession in the exodus. Thus, in this play, the protagonist is the representative of a collective, since Chremylus is an ordinary peasant who, anyhow, still bears the ideal of peace and justice of Aristophanes' comedy. In order to make this whole situation understood, the aim of this research is to render the play into Portuguese and analyze it, seeking to establish its position within the production of the comediograph. Therefore, the first part of the dissertation presents the rendition of the comedy into Portuguese, then comes the study, which begins with a presentation of any records in the text concerning the historical moment; after that, the phases of the plays by Aristophanes; the transitional period of the comedy; and to conclude, a study of the formal and functional structure of Plutus.
