Passagem para a Índia: o romance de e. M. Forster no filme de David Lean

Abstract

The novel A Passage to India (1924), by E. M. Forster, may be seen as innovative for the way they deal with complex themes and polemical discussions, which question beliefs and social conventions. It brings to the fore concepts such as identity, culture, race, social class and sexuality as important elements of criticism of the British political and cultural system in the last century. This paper aims to analyze the translation of this modern English novel to the cinema by the director David Lean (1984). Some strategies of translation will be presented, and ways of reading this literary text in the context of the cinema will be discussed. In order to so, principles of Film Adaptation as Translation (CATTRYSSE, 1992), and elements for the construction of cinematographic texts (METZ, 1980) will be taken into consideration to understand the process of creation and consolidation of this translation in the representation of Forster’s literary universe to spectators.
