Título: Comparação dos dados demográficos e de morbimortalidade de pacientes com doença renal crônica dialítica acometidos pela covid-19 em 2020 versus 2021
Autor(es): Aragão, Yaranara Linhares
Abstract: Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) consists of the irreversible loss of kidney
function slowly and progressively. The number of renal patients is growing worldwide, and
Brazil already represents the third largest hemodialysis market. The Covid-19 pandemic has
had a global impact, highlighting limitations in transmission, risk factors and their severity.
Patients with chronic kidney disease are high-risk groups for severe cases of Covid-19 to
develop. OBJECTIVE: To compare the demographic profile, clinical complications and
mortality rate in patients with dialysis chronic kidney disease affected by COVID-19 in 2020
versus 2021. RESULTS: A total of 152 subjects participated in the study. The average age
found in the survey was 57.5 (37 – 65.2) years. The sample was characterized by male patients,
63.8% and female patients, 36.2%, who required hospitalization of 11.3% and death was 13.3%.
DISCUSSION: One of the extremely significant findings in the study illustrates the
manifestation of such latent potentials: : as in the characterization of the sample, a higher
prevalence of patients who tested for COVID-19 was observed in patients with an average age
of 57 years and male. The spatial distribution of the degree of incidence of Covid-19 in the
municipalities of the state of Ceará demonstrated the inequality in the incidence coefficient of
this pandemic with spatial dependence and positive correlation of the high type associated with
the municipal human development index. The short-term mortality rate in dialysis patients,
most patients even after the diagnosis of COVID-19 had not died. CONCLUSION: The quality
of life of chronic renal dialysis patients is well compromised because they are in treatment
impairment. CKD, and some chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension
and diabetes mellitus are among the comorbidities that imply a higher risk for a severe clinical
presentation for several types of infectious diseases.

Abstract: Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause infections in its host through its virulence factors. The limited antifungal options have led to a search for therapeutic alternatives, and essential oils, such as those from the Citrus genus, stand out for their antifungal potential. The study was conducted in the northern region of the state of Ceará,
through partnerships between institutions. It strengthens regional innovation and the potential of bioprospecting natural products in microbiology using plants cultivated in the region, thus
presenting important results in the areas of biotechnology and health. This study analyzes the chemical composition, antifungal activity against Candida albicans in planktonic and biofilm forms, cytotoxicity in human erythrocytes, and pharmacokinetic properties of essential oils
from Citrus limon and Citrus sinensis. The essential oils were extracted from the leaves by hydrodistillation, and their composition was verified by GC-MS. Antifungal activity was evaluated using broth microdilution and death kinetics. Combined effects were assessed using
the Checkerboard method, while antibiofilm tests were evaluated using plate assays and microscopy . Hemolytic activity tests were performed using a percentage of hemolysis. The essential oils contain limonene (40.81-36.69%) as the major constituent. The Minimum
Inhibitory Concentration was 0.312–1.25 mg/mL, with a killing kinetic of up to 10 h. It showed additive (C. limon/fluconazole) and synergistic (C. sinensis/fluconazole) effects. It exhibited anti-adhesion and anti-polymorphism effects, initiating biofilm formation. It also
exhibited low cytotoxicity , with an LC50 of 14,000-13,000 μg/mL. ADMET and BOILED-Egg pharmacokinetic predictions indicated safety for systemic use. Both essential oils exhibited strong anti-Candida activity with minimal cytotoxicity . Their additive/synergistic effects with fluconazole highlight their potential as an alternative or adjuvant therapy against C. albicans infections.

Avaliação do efeito do timol durante a vitrificação de folículos pré-antrais inclusos em tecido ovariano bovino

Título: Avaliação do efeito do timol durante a vitrificação de folículos pré-antrais inclusos em tecido ovariano bovino

Abstract: Cryopreservation is a widely used strategy for preserving fertility; however, vitrification still has limitations associated with mechanical, chemical, and oxidative stress, which can compromise tissue integrity after rewarming. In this context, antioxidant supplementation has been proposed as a promising approach to minimize cryoinjuries. The present study aimed to evaluate the dose-response effects and antioxidant potential of thymol during the vitrification of bovine ovarian tissue. Initially, a dose-response assay was conducted on bovine cumulus cells, cultured in vitro and exposed to different concentrations of thymol (2.5, 25, and 250 μg/mL), in order to evaluate cell viability and cytotoxicity using calcein-AM and ethidium homodimer-1 assays. Next, fragments of bovine ovarian cortex were fixed in 10% paraformaldehyde (non-vitrified control) or subjected to vitrification in solutions supplemented with thymol at the same concentrations. After storage in liquid nitrogen, the
tissues were rewarmed in solutions with decreasing concentrations of sucrose; part of the samples was analyzed immediately after rewarming, while the rest were incubated in vitro for 24 h. Tissue integrity was assessed by follicular morphology, ovarian stromal density, and extracellular matrix components, including collagen and glycosaminoglycans. The redox state was analyzed by antioxidant enzyme activity (SOD, CAT, and GPX) and thiol and nitrite
levels. The results of the cumulus cell assay showed that 25 μg/mL and 250 μg/mL of thymol increased calcein labeling compared to the control medium, which is indicative of cell viability. Vitrification of ovarian tissue promoted changes in the redox state, evidenced by thiol depletion and reduced GPX activity. Supplementation with 25 μg/mL thymol increased SOD activity in vitrified tissue, which may represent a response to oxidative stress. On the
other hand, the presence of 250 μg/mL thymol preserved thiol levels and GPX activity similar to those in non-vitrified tissue. Nitrite levels were reduced after vitrification in all groups, likely reflecting metabolic suppression. In addition, thymol, at all concentrations, increased the proportion of morphologically normal follicles, preserved ovarian stromal density, and maintained extracellular matrix components after rewarming. It is concluded that the presence of 250 μg/mL thymol in the vitrification solution of bovine ovarian cortex has cytoprotective effects that contribute to maintaining redox balance after rewarming, and to preserving the structural integrity of the tissue.

Título: Uma validação das leis de Lehman: uma investigação quantitativa no desenvolvimento de software moderno
Autor(es): Sousa, Augusto Braz de
Abstract: This study investigates the applicability and relevance of Lehman’s Laws in the current context of software development, using a quantitative approach to analyze three modern systems: Dropwizard, K-9 Mail, and LanguageTool. Through the Goal Question Metric (GQM) framework, the research empirically validates Lehman’s Laws, which describe fundamental principles of
software evolution, such as continuous change, increasing complexity, and conservation of organizational stability. The study is divided into two main stages. The first stage involves analyzing the evolution metrics of the three selected software systems, verifying their compliance with Lehman’s Laws. The second stage utilizes the lessons learned to develop practical guidelines
that can be applied to software development and maintenance. The results confirm that Lehman’s Laws are applicable and relevant to modern software systems, providing a theoretical foundation for guiding development and maintenance practices. The analyzed metrics demonstrate growth and complexity patterns that corroborate Lehman’s proposed laws. Additionally, the study offers a summary of the lessons learned and practical guidelines for developers and maintenance teams, aiming to improve adaptability, reduce complexity, and ensure the continuous quality of systems. These guidelines are based on empirical evidence collected and offer recommendations for
the efficient evolution of software. The main contributions of this work include the empirical validation of Lehman’s Laws, the application of the GQM framework as a methodological basis, and the creation of practical guidelines based on the lessons learned.
