      <title>Determinação dos receptores estrogênicos (RcE2) no carcinoma mamário</title>

      <description>Título: Determinação dos receptores estrogênicos (RcE2) no carcinoma mamário
Autor(es): Almeida, Francisco Manuelito Lima de
Abstract: The concentration of estrogen&#xD;
cytoplasmic receptors (R^E^) in 27 patients with invasive&#xD;
ductal breast cancer wçre determined, utilizing the Pex-t/ia.n&#xD;
Coctte-d Cha.^.eoaí (ÜCC) procedure in cytosol preparations. They&#xD;
were detected in 51.9%.&#xD;
The patients age, parity,breast&#xD;
feeding, menstrual status, clinical stage and hystological&#xD;
features were analysed.&#xD;
Except to hystological charact^&#xD;
ristic, there was no correlation between the positivity of&#xD;
R^E^ and these parameters.&#xD;
Indeed the tumor's cells aiffe&#xD;
rentiation and cell number were determinant factors that may&#xD;
interfer to R^E, positivity.

Abstract: This study had the objective to evaluate the performance of vaginal ultrasound and&#xD;
hysteroscopy as tests of endometrial evaluation, in a group of 31 pôs menopausal patients of&#xD;
the Gynecology Sector of Maternidade Escola Assis Chateaubriand-UFC considering the&#xD;
histological findings as the gold standart. The study was prospective one, in the period of abril&#xD;
2005 to November 2005. Were included patients in amenorrhea of at least one year duration&#xD;
and FSH levels over 40 mUI/ml. Were excluded hysterectomized patients, patients with&#xD;
transvaginal bleeding and those that did not did vaginal ultrasound and hysteroscopy. The&#xD;
vaginal ultrasound data evaluate were: endometrial thickness, regularity and ecogenicity.&#xD;
These data were analyzed through the receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC), Kappa&#xD;
coefficient, t Student test for correlation of nonnal variables and Test of Mann-Whitney for&#xD;
abnormal distribution variables. The most frequent hysteroscopic findings was atrophic&#xD;
endometrium, in 61.2% of cases. Edometrial polyps were found in 19.4% of cases, and&#xD;
myomas in 12.9% and thickened endometrium in 6.5%. Concerning the vaginal ultrasound&#xD;
findings, the most common findings was atrophic endometrium in 24 patients, 77.4% of&#xD;
cases, thickened endometrium in two cases, 6.4%, endometrial polyp in one patient, 3.2%&#xD;
and myoma in 12.9%. Concerning the histological findings, the most common findings was&#xD;
atrophic endometrium, 64.5% of cases. Endometrial polyps m 16.1% of cases, myomas in&#xD;
12.9%, proliferative endometrium in 3.2% e hyperplasic endometrium in 3.2% of patients.&#xD;
Taking in account the prevalence of endometrium alterations in the pos menopausal period of&#xD;
30%, the sensitivity of the vaginal ultrasound to detect endometrium alterations was of 63.7%,&#xD;
the specificity was 100%, the positive predictive value was of 100% and the negative&#xD;
predictive value was of 83.3% with an accuracy of 89%. In the group of patients the&#xD;
possibility that a negative diagnosis can occur is 2.75 times than to have the same diagnosis in&#xD;
a group of patients with endometrium alterations. We conclude that vaginal ultrasound is a&#xD;
good screening test in pos menopausal asymptomatic patients

Abstract: Positivity of steroid receptors (e4íA.ogen&#xD;
and pfLOge-Síe-tone) and levei were investigated in&#xD;
a series of 41 tumors of patients with breast carcinoma of&#xD;
correlated&#xD;
with me.nAtsiu.aZ AtataA, hZAtoZogZc dZ^eA.eníZaXZon, epéí/ieZZzzZ&#xD;
c.e.ZZuZaA.ZZí/, nucZea/i atypy, and Zymphocytz Zn^ZZtftatZon.&#xD;
Correlation between ER and PR positivity&#xD;
and the presence of elastose (ZeveZ-5 1 and 2] occurred in&#xD;
0) cases there was no&#xD;
ER-po-óZZZue. However,&#xD;
total&#xD;
correlation with poAtttve ER and for half of the case with&#xD;
po-óZ-tZve PR.&#xD;
In the present study we observed greater&#xD;
occurrence of positive elastose in tumors with a low levei&#xD;
of histologic differentiation, epithelial cellularity,&#xD;
nuclear atypy, and lymphocyte infiltration.&#xD;
The incidence and concentration of&#xD;
estrogen receptors (ER) were higher among post-menopausal&#xD;
women. No variation in progesterone receptors (PR) by&#xD;
menstrual status was observed.&#xD;
The highest distribution of positive ER&#xD;
and PR was detected in tumors having AZZyht and modeaate.&#xD;
nuclear atypy, and lymphocyte infiltration.

      <title>Maternal participation patterns in a community-based growth monitoring programme in North-East Brazil</title>

      <description>Título: Maternal participation patterns in a community-based growth monitoring programme in North-East Brazil
Autor(es): Correia, Luciano Lima
Abstract: Maternal participation patterns in a community-based growth monitoring programme in North~East Brazil were analyzed. The cultural, socio- economic and health-related characteristics of participant and non-&#xD;
participant mothers and children were identified and compared.&#xD;
I.t was&#xD;
found that 30% of mothers and their respectivo children living within&#xD;
the programme's catchment area did not participate in the&#xD;
growth-&#xD;
monitoring programme. Participation was higher in urban than rural areas. Mothers were asked their reasons for non-participation in the&#xD;
programme and in 30% of cases claimed that they had never been invited to participate. Non-participant mothers showed higher rates of illiteracy, non-use of available health resources, child deaths and hospitalizatlon that participant mothers. No significant difference in relation to age, family income or the nutritional status of their children was observed&#xD;
between the two groups of mothers. It was concluded that a large number of children of mothers from the non- participant group were highly at risk and that steps to reach them with the growth-monitoring programme should be taken. Suggestions for achieving this objective were formulated.
