Abstract: This paper analyses the translations of the poems “Death is a Dialogue between” and&#xD;
“I’m nobody! Who are you?” made by Augusto de Campos (1986) to his book O&#xD;
Anticrítico (1986). The analysis outlines some choices made by the translator regarding&#xD;
themes, meanings, rhyming patterns and lexica to keep Dickinson’s poetic style. It is&#xD;
also discussed how the translations establish a dialogue in terms of form and meaning&#xD;
with the source text. We start from the hypothesis that even though source and target&#xD;
texts present unique thematic purposes, they dialogue in a proficuous way with the&#xD;
target context. As theoretical background, we made reference to Carlos Daghlian&#xD;
(2008), Paulo Henriques Britto (2008), José Lira (2004), John Milton (1998), Lefevere&#xD;
(1992) and Paz (1981). As a result, It was concluded that Augusto de Campos presented&#xD;
a successful translation. He utilized linguistic features such as rhyming pattern, tone,&#xD;
meaning and lexica that dialogue with the source text. Therefore, he spread Dickinson’s&#xD;
poetry in the Brazilian contemporary literary system.

Abstract: Watching subtitled material has been repeatedly suggested to be a good source of Second Language Acquisition (SLA). With the use of eye-tracking based methodologies, many studies have observed this phenomenon and have documented the effectives and drawbacks of using subtitled materials in SLA. Hence, it is important to systematize these findings in order to be able to visualize what past research has found, where we stand, and possible future research endeavors. In this context, this systematic review is aimed at reviewing and analyzing recent studies on the reading of subtitles based on eye-tracking methodologies. It illustrates the beginnings of this technology and how it operates, the measures used in the studies, and what they reveal in terms of one’s cognitive processing while engaged in video watching activity from a Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) perspective. The results show that, despite indicating the inherent possibility to use standards for eye-tracking measures, the studies vary considerably and sometimes lack clarity as to their full replicability. Concerning CLT, it might still be early to come up with robust answers considering the results reported in the reviewed studies, especially considering the variability of the nature of the studies herein included. The outcomes from this research bring about the need for the standardization in eye-tracking studies while encouraging the field to conduct more research so that we can count on a more comprehensive and clear method of measuring all facets involved in subtitled video watching tasks and eye-tracking based methodologies in the future.

Abstract: The present study is an analysis on how black masculinities are represented in modern hip hop, analyzing the multimodal discourse of the videoclip ELEMENT by the American rapper Kendrick Lamar. The theoretical background used to the analysis was the theory of speech acts developed by Austin and later by Judith Butler considering the importance of the role of the body in conveying messages. The embodied speech acts present in the video and the lyrics and their connections were analyzed reaching the conclusion that the black masculinity stereotypes were both subverted and embraced exploring the contrasts present in the discourse.

Abstract: Learning a second language requires learning devices that are tailored to the needs and abilities of learners. For teaching a new language, new methods have been designed over the to assisting the process more ways. As a result, over time, the translation method has become less widely used. However, this study aims to show that the translation can be used as a learning tool. This study aimed at investigating whether the translation of cognate words can positively influence the process of English language learning in students with few or no knowledge of the language. For this, a translation task containing cognate words was applied to a group of English Language learners, whose ages varied between 20 and 31 years. The results of the study showed, through percentage data of correct answers in the task, that the translation of cognates can be, besides a motivating element, a learning tool, mainly for the acquisition of vocabulary.
