    <title>Arquitetura do medo em Fortaleza</title>

    <description>Título: Arquitetura do medo em Fortaleza

Abstract: We study in this research an Architecture of Fear in Fortaleza, an urban process, although in a different and less expressive way, has always existed in the cities, and that has recently been presented more explicitly in Brazilian cities that suffer from the problems of violence and fear. We present, in the first chapter, the conceptualization of the Architecture of the Fear that we investigate, its singularity as object of study, and the statement of the thesis presented here. In the second chapter, we deal with the fundamental questions of the research that we developed, in the search for situations that would show us the "limits" of where "differences" could arise, meetings and territorial constitution, knowledge associated with the problem and reasons for the construction of Architecture of Fear in Fortaleza. In the third chapter, we proceed to a complementary approach, where and when we will be identifying the boundaries (from the outside and the inside) in an analysis of urban micropolitics and processes of subjectivation, within the scope of the problem of fear construction, violence, the analyzed architecture and the city, more especially of the urban spaces that undergo interference of the implantation of the architecture of the bars and the walls that isolate, explain dichotomies: safe and insecure; private and public; rich and poor, good (citizens) and bad ("elements"), or in three words: segregation, self-segregation and fear. We conclude with a chapter that shows us that we are dealing with a theme in which we value, as a method of approach, studies of the relation of subjectivity to social exteriority that is of fundamental importance for understanding the present world, where the architecture of fear is inserted, but we also show that we are dealing here with processes that can be reopened, revised, from any place of time and space, without beginning, without teleology, but with the hope that the processes of homogenization of organisms can be broken, giving space to a field of immanence of desire, where creativity can flow to the benefit of better spaces of Brazilian architecture and cities.

    <title>Dinâmicas urbanas recentes da área metropolitana de Fortaleza</title>
    <link>http://repositorio.ufc.br/handle/riufc/8240</link>
    <description>Título: Dinâmicas urbanas recentes da área metropolitana de Fortaleza
Autor(es): Diógenes, Beatriz Helena Nogueira
Abstract: This work’s main objective is to study Fortaleza’s metropolitan area urban growth patterns that&#xD;
have been observed in the last three decades (1980-2011). A detailed investigation of that process&#xD;
was concerned to examine and analyze relevant transformations occurring in the structure of urban&#xD;
and metropolitan spaces, focusing on relating them to recent urbanization processes. First, this&#xD;
study approaches theoretical and conceptual aspects related to contemporary urbanization, stating&#xD;
a theoretical understanding of the subject, and tries to correlate that, when feasible, to Fortaleza’s&#xD;
recent urban growth. Then, in order to better characterize the object of study, a description and&#xD;
an analysis of this metropolitan area are made by investigating the dynamics and socio-economic&#xD;
dimensions of that metropolis. The following approach and discussion deals with actual urban expansion&#xD;
of Fortaleza from a perspective of observed transformations in these past decades, based&#xD;
on the analysis of different axes of urban and metropolitan growth, intending to verify their particular&#xD;
pattern of development. Finally, this work focus on a particular area, in greater detail - the&#xD;
southeastern part of the metropolis - where new spatialities and different patterns of urban fabric&#xD;
are found. After analyzing different axes of expansion, the hypothesis that current urban growth of&#xD;
Fortaleza’s metropolitan area has not been occurring homogeneously and it presents a particular&#xD;
dynamic and a distinctive center-periphery model, which prevailed in 1980’s, is accepted. Further,&#xD;
this study finds some evidence that, indeed, there are new and unprecedented urban processes&#xD;
in accordance to latest forms of urbanization, similar to what occurs in other urban areas of Brazil&#xD;
and of other countries. This dynamic is more evident in the southeastern sector of the metropolis,&#xD;
where there are new forms of centrality formation, and the presence of more scattered and discontinuous&#xD;
nuclei, consisting of condominiums and tourist facilities displayed along eastern seacoast.&#xD;
This sector can be characterized as the most representative within the metropolis in terms of new&#xD;
forms of urbanization, indicating disruption of traditional urban growth patterns. The purpose of&#xD;
this study, in short, has been to identify characteristics of the undergoing urbanization process, to&#xD;
deepen the analysis and to investigate the specific set of changes that are taking over Fortaleza’s&#xD;
metropolitan area. To examine actual urban growth pattern is essential to, both, discover ways to&#xD;
deal with this new reality and create tools to support more consistent future planning proposals and&#xD;
interventions considering urban expansion, in order to ensure proper functioning and development&#xD;
of contemporary metropolises.

Abstract: The objective of this research is to shed light on the debate about recent socio-spatial&#xD;
transformations in Brazilian cities. One can observe in these transformations market processes&#xD;
and niches linked to real-estate products that participate as the causes for the urban dissolution&#xD;
in contemporary large cities, characterized by territorial fragmentation and social segregation.&#xD;
While focusing on those real-estate products that are linked to tourism, we have aimed to&#xD;
understand the process by way of which the articulation of such new form of social production&#xD;
of space, based on an emerging scenario created by social agents, takes place. Such agents are&#xD;
seen as the subjects who bring forth innovative urban practices though intrinsically committed&#xD;
to the logic of quick increase of capital. Such focus can be justified for provoking a discussion&#xD;
about the concepts of occupation pattern and spatial structuring, as an attempt to understand the&#xD;
new role played by real-estate agents involved in tourism. In the first chapter we approach the&#xD;
theoretical discussion on the production of contemporary cities in a re-structuring context,&#xD;
analyzing the fundamentals of production and appropriation of the contemporary urban space.&#xD;
As our point of departure, we took over the concept of social space and its production as a&#xD;
strategy towards the accumulation of capital, emphasizing the role played by the market and the&#xD;
State in the spatial organization of production. Then we discussed both the metropolitan&#xD;
transitional issue and the urban dissolution of contemporary cities, by using the concept of a restructuring&#xD;
standpoint associated with the concept of globalization, emphasizing the new pattern&#xD;
of city as well as the new spatial configuration. In the second chapter we carry out the first&#xD;
approximation to the central issue, analyzing the coastal urbanization in the context of the&#xD;
metropolitan re-structuring of Fortaleza. Thus, we examined the detailed features of the Coastal&#xD;
Areas of Ceará, the ‘occupational process’ of those areas and the consolidation of Fortaleza as a&#xD;
Capital City, by emphasizing, in detail, the process as it gradually became a metropolis. For that&#xD;
reason, we started from an analysis that comprehends from the belated industrialization of the&#xD;
Northeast of Brazil to the productive and socio-territorial re-structuring of modern Ceará in&#xD;
order to emphasize the emergency of tourism in its relation to the production of a new urban&#xD;
coastal space. In the third chapter we treated the central issue of both the metropolitan restructuring&#xD;
and the emerging need for tourism, focusing on the participation of real-estate agents&#xD;
as in the case of Aquiraz. Such a choice is due to the fact that that coastal line reveals more&#xD;
clearly the issue under analysis, creating conclusive elements capable of consolidating our final&#xD;
considerations. Thus it was possible to say in conclusion that ‘the action of those real-estate&#xD;
agents respond to the re-organization of a new process of production of space for tourism, in the&#xD;
face of the need to incorporate new territories into the logic of capital growth’.
