Abstract: Springs are essential hydrogeomorphological environments for hydrological
dynamics, biodiversity conservation, and human water supply. Despite their
environmental and social relevance, they remain largely underrepresented in
spatial mapping, compromising management and conservation efforts.
Discussions on spring mapping are often accompanied by the challenge of
defining a reliable methodology for detecting these features in the landscape. In
this context, this doctoral thesis aimed to evaluate the application of an automatic
extraction method as a supporting tool for spring identification. Specifically, it
analyzed the influence of spatial resolution and elevation model type on the
automatic extraction of springs through the generation of Hydrologically
Conditioned Digital Elevation Models (HCDEMs). Four Digital Elevation Models
(NASADEM, COPDEM, SRTM/ASF, and TanDEM-X) and two Digital Terrain
Models (ANADEM and FABDEM), all derived from radar interferometry, with
spatial resolutions of 12 m, 12.5 m, and 30 m, were employed. The study was
conducted in three experimental areas located in the Baturité Massif, Ceará
State, Brazil. Automatic spring extraction was performed in the QGIS
environment using the SAGA GIS tool. The results were evaluated based on an
adapted completeness analysis, following the Technical Specification for
Geospatial Data Quality Control (ET-CQDG), using georeferenced field survey
data as reference. This approach enabled the assessment of both the spatial
correspondence and the operational usefulness of the extracted data. The results
indicated better performance for models with higher spatial resolution, although
no consistent superiority was observed between Digital Elevation Models and
Digital Terrain Models. The best performance was found in the Bananal area,
associated with gentler relief and higher moisture conditions, whereas the Ouro
and Rolador areas, characterized by steeper terrain, presented greater limitations

for spring identification. These findings demonstrate the potential of high-
resolution orbital elevation models for supporting automatic spring extraction.

Therefore, this study highlights the promising application of altimetric models in
identifying priority areas for the detection and investigation of spring
environmental systems.

Abstract: Water and energy are fundamental resources for the capital accumulation, especially
at the present moment of its development. At the same time, the main means of
obtaining these resources are responsible for promoting attempts at domination and
producing spaces for capital reproduction. However, the spatialization of these
attempts of domination does not occur without resistance, and these processes of
resistance also have spatialities. In light of the above, the Movement of People Affected
by Dams (MAB) has been, since the year of its nationalization in 1991, the most
expressive representative of the struggle of those affected and affected by dams in
Brazil. In this research, I present the genesis of MAB in Ceará, which was born with
the construction of the Castanho Dam. The dam work, carried out between 1995 and
2003, planned during the Government of Changes in the 1980s, reached the
municipalities of Jaguaribara, Jaguaribe, Jaguaretama and Alto Santo. I also present
how the spatialization of MAB occurred in the State from the implementation of
technical objects in space and the formation of Movement’s Regions of action. Cast as
the general objective of the research in development to discuss the process of
spatialization of the Movement of People Affected by Dams in the State of Ceará. I
have as specific objectives to interpret the birth process of MAB in Ceará; understand
the specificity of MAB in Ceará from a scalar perspective and understand which are
the spaces built by MAB in the state. The methodology of this research is divided into
three stages. The first corresponds to the bibliographical survey of the material already
produced about the study and documentary research; the second stage is carrying out
exploratory field work associated with non-structured focused interviews and
participant observation (MARCONI and LAKATOS, 2003); and the third stage
corresponds to the transcription of the interview audios, information’s organization
obtained from the documentary research and writing of the dissertation. This
dissertation contains five chapters: The first presents an introduction about the subject
studied; In the second chapter I present the theoretical basis used in the research
reported here. In the third chapter I discuss the birth of the MAB in Brazil and the scalar
performance of the Movement; Finally, I present the process of emergence and
spatialization of the MAB in Ceará, highlighting the regions where the Movement

operates in the state and the conception of the region of action taken by the MAB in
Ceará.

Abstract: Coastal erosion is a dynamic process that compromises the environmental integrity of coastal areas and directly impacts the livelihoods of traditional communities. At Praia do Batoque, located within the Batoque Extractive Reserve (RESEX) in Aquiraz (CE), intense morphodynamic changes have been observed over the past decades, affecting artisanal fishing, the main local economic activity. This research aimed to analyze the spatio-temporal variation
of the coastline between the years 2003 and 2025, using the DSAS (Digital Shoreline Analysis System) with the End Point Rate (EPR) and Linear Regression Rate (LRR) methods. The results indicated significant rates of coastline retreat in the studied sector, with maximum erosion values exceeding -4 m/year in some sections. The multitemporal comparison revealed the
replacement of natural features by degraded areas, as well as the advance of mobile dunes over buildings, with residential losses reported by the local population. The loss of post-beach areas used for boat resting and fish trade was observed, compromising the practice of artisanal fishing. The improvised use of materials to try to contain erosion, vehicle traffic in sensitive areas such as turtle nesting sites, and the increase of anthropization in zones classified as
maximum protection were also noted. The research highlights the urgency of integrated management actions, emphasizing public policies aimed at protecting traditional communities and preserving coastal ecosystems. The Batoque RESEX, although legally established, lacks effective management instruments that ensure its ecological and sociocultural functionality,
such as increased local supervision.
