dc.description.abstractDescription of a discourse community (according the theory of Swales) which appears in an Internet chat room.Swales proposes some characteristics that will be necessary for identifying a group of individuals as a discourse community: theownership of common public goals, of mechanisms of intercommunication and participation among its members; of genres andspecific Lexis; of a hierarchic structure. This characteristics are observed in the corpus, composed by records of conversationsof the chat ‘P&R’, e-mails and personal sites of the participants, sections of ICQ dialogs and observation of other ways ofcommunication used by the members of the community.pt_BR
