Normas e transgressões: as tentativas de disciplinar: o viver na Teresina Oitocentista

Abstract

The Codes of Posture and the newspapers that circulated in Teresina in the second half of the nineteenth century as The Press and The Weekly provide important information for understanding the flows of various subjects through the city, in which the clear concern of the municipal public administration to ensure good conduct in urban space. Considering that there was the concern to maintain the good behaviors in the city and also the desire to control its inhabitants, who forged several tactics to avoid the impositions of the public power. This article analyzes the living in Teresina in the second half of the nineteenth century as it was the object of the disciplinarian look of the public power, which sought disciplinary strategies, such as the postures to repress deviant behavior in the city space. But also tactics of the inhabitants of the capital city to these attempts of the public power to control their individual rights, which are revealed in the newspapers.
