Indignação e rotinização: sobre sofrimentos e estratégias para lidar com a violência policial em uma favela pacificada

Abstract

This text presents a reflection on the strategies of residents of a slum in Rio de Janeiro to deal with police practices of violence and arbitrariness, in a context of “pacification” of the slum. The implementation of the Unidades de Polícia Pacificadora (UPPs) is important insofar as the UPPs have represented and figured like a shift from the old way of doing of the police, supported in the idea of war, to a new way of doing supported in the notion of peace, at least discursively. From the resident’s reports on police violence, I discuss how the indignation towards these practices coexists with certain routinization, both the permanent exposure to this violence and the strategies to deal with it and protect yourself physically and emotionally.
