Violência expressa e impressa: greve e repressão policial no Ceará nos anos 1980

Abstract

This article is part of a research on the experience and the memories of Finobrasa textile factory workers sttrugles in the 1980’s in Fortaleza, with emphasis on the strike that happened in May of 1988. The strike lasted 23 days. The first one occurred in the company itself. In the documentation on the same, emerges a content of conflicts, tension and violence with the involvement of the company’s workers, administration as well as several other institutions and individuals such as: The Military Police of the State of Ceará, the State governor, members of the Catholic Church, politicians, Judiciary Officials and militants of social movements. In this paper, the focus of the research will be directed to repression against the workers, the practical solidarity with the strikers, and violence by Military Police expressed by means of narratives and printed in different newspapers of Ceará. The paper will be supported and backed by oral sources, newspapers sources, trade union sources and bibliographical references. By carrying out a study like this, it is hoped that such paper contributes to the historiography that investigates the criminalization of the working class movement caused by repressive state-run institutions.
