In this context, the research addressed water security in a community located in the semiarid region of Ceará. The main objective was to understand the local water panorama through the analysis of water availability and the different modalities of water management, using participatory diagnostic approaches and examining their interrelations. The study was conducted in Vila Algodões, in the Damião Carneiro District, located in the municipality of Quixeramobim, in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Regarding the methodological strategies adopted, Social Cartography constituted the central axis of the investigation, and as complementary tools, the SWOT Matrix and the analysis of Household Water Insecurity questionnaires were employed. The main results reveal the coexistence of multiple forms of water supply and use, as well as distinct water management arrangements—individual, community-based, and institutional. The main objective is to analyze how retail trade activities are organized and transformed within the context of the structural changes that characterize the urban-metropolitan space. The research adopts a qualitative-quantitative, exploratory approach, with a spatial scope limited to the RMF. The methodological procedures included bibliographic and documentary research, analysis of secondary data, compilation of a newspaper archive, and the preparation of tables, graphs, and maps. The object of study was the retail trade sector, based on information from official sources such as the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS), the Institute for Research and Economic Strategy of Ceará (IPECE), the IBGE Automatic Recovery System (SIDRA), and the National Register of Addresses for Statistical Purposes (CNEFE, 2022). The results indicate a trend of declining participation by Fortaleza in the total number of retail establishments in the RMF, accompanied by relative growth in municipalities located farther from the capital. Furthermore, major urban interventions were carried out on commercial avenues in Fortaleza, Caucaia, and Maracanaú; however, only in Fortaleza were significant negative impacts observed, attributed to changes in the dynamics of pedestrian flow, with direct repercussions on retail activity.
