Abstract: Among hanging plants in a studio, giant sequoias, and tiny mint leaves, this dissertation identifies relations between Memory, so-called Nature, Artistic Creation, and institutional places of Art—with an emphasis on exhibition spaces—relations that have emerged as problematic for various creative processes of trans and travesti artists in contemporary Brazil. The research explores conceptual elements of (re)decomposition and cultivation as the expressive matter of the works, blended with primary research that brings to light the experiences lived within exhibition spaces by these artists, including the author, in their own lives and across various other places on the planet. Methodologically, the research is organized through "conversations" with five contemporary trans artists (Dan Lie, JeisiEkê de Lundu, Walla Capelobo, Tetê, and Pedra Preciosa Silva), in which we could perceive the tensions between the attempt at containment and the fluidity of living matter in the artistic works. We map how these artists subvert the logic of isolation and conservation typically associated with the contemporary museum—the widely criticized White Cube—and the ways in which such practices provoke compelling frictions that introduce a greater degree of unpredictability into the museum's logic of conservation. By welcoming the processes of rotting and transformation, the artistic poetics grouped in this dissertation suggest a more integrated understanding of ontology, recognizing the codependency of kingdoms and the interconnection of life. It is an ancestral travesti knowledge that endures through time, conversations that open debates and traverse walls, liquids fermenting the museum, and whispers in an art gallery smelling of mud.

Abstract: This research investigates the presence, reception, and sense of belonging of bodies that deviate from aesthetic and socioeconomic norms subtly imposed by Brazilian cultural institutions and urban spaces, focusing on museums and public areas in Fortaleza (CE). Grounded in an autobiographical and theoretical-practical approach through performance art, the study presents the artistic work Álvaro as a result of these investigations. It draws on the researcher’s personal experience as an art educator and visual artist marked by exclusion, surveillance, and subalternization. The research examines how colonial and necropolitical mechanisms (Mbembe) continue to operate, while also exploring practices of resistance and re-existence inspired by the concept of aquilombamento (Nascimento). Methodologically, it combines autobiographical narratives, sentimental cartography (Rolnik), spiral time (Martins), and performance as both a methodological and political device. The project engages with contemporary artists and proposes the displacement of dissident bodies into nontraditional art spaces—such as squares, street markets, and urban terminals—fostering contemporary forms of aquilombamento as aesthetic, political, and affective gestures. Ultimately, it articulates art, education, and performance as practices capable of challenging institutional hegemonies and redefining ways of being, inhabiting, and producing urban subjectivities.
