Abstract: This study characterizes the shellfish harvesting activity carried out by women from the Batoque Extractive Reserve (RESEX), a federal protected area located in the municipality of Aquiraz, highlighting local ecological knowledge, sociocultural dynamics, and the central role of shellfish gatherers in territorial management. The research adopted an ethnographic and participatory approach, including community workshops, social mapping, SWOT analysis, the GUT method, a seasonal calendar, and the application of a semi-structured questionnaire containing 56 questions. The results reveal that shellfish harvesting constitutes an ancestral practice marked by a strong sense of territorial belonging, expressed through the symbolic value of artisanal tools and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge. The work routine is characterized by the integration of harvesting, processing, commercialization, and domestic activities, demonstrating the centrality of women in the community’s social and economic reproduction. Participatory mapping identified critical areas within the Boa Vista Stream mangrove and the Batoque Lagoon, associated with species decline and environmental degradation. The seasonal calendar highlighted periods of abundance, closed season, and scarcity, reinforcing the shellfish gatherers’ accuracy in interpreting ecological indicators. It was observed that 100% of the interviewees depend on shellfish harvesting as a partial or total source of income, predominantly use artisanal tools, and identify climate change, sedimentation, declining water quality, and the artificial opening of the sandbar as the main threats to the ecosystem. The GUT analysis identified as priorities the improvement of access routes to harvesting areas, logistical support, mangrove conservation measures, and the strengthening of shared management practices. The study demonstrates that shellfish gatherers play a decisive role in the governance of the RESEX by actively participating in the deliberative council and territorial management forums, where they articulate traditional ecological knowledge, community organization, and territorial defense. It is concluded that the recognition of these forms of knowledge and the expansion of specific public policies are essential for socio-environmental sustainability and for the continuity of traditional ways of life in coastal zones.

Abstract: This  study  evaluated  the  influence  of  urbanization  and  fixed  tourist  infrastructure  (beach  shacks)  on  populations  of  the  ghost  crab  Ocypode  quadrata  on  sandy  beaches  of  Brazil's  semiarid coast. Two complementary approaches were conducted. In Chapter 1, five beaches  with  varying  levels  of  urban  development  were  assessed  using  morphological  data,  anthropogenic impact indicators, and ghost crab population parameters (burrow density and  diameter). Despite differences in urbanization, no significant variation in burrow density or  diameter was observed, except between Sabiaguaba and Canto Verde beaches. In Chapter 2,  intra-beach variation was examined at Praia do Futuro by comparing areas with and without  beach  shacks.  While  overall  burrow  density  did  not  differ,  spatial  redistribution  and  significantly larger burrow diameters were found in shack areas, likely reflecting increased food  availability.  These  findings  suggest  that  although  burrow  density  alone  may  be  a  limited  bioindicator,  burrow  diameter  and  spatial  distribution  reflect  adaptive  responses  to  anthropogenic pressures and may support more effective coastal management strategies.

Abstract: Restingas are geologically recent ecosystems found along the coast on sandy coastal barriers.  In Brazil, they are characteristic sandy coastal ecosystems and are considered communities  integrated into the Atlantic Forest Biogeographic Domain. Restingas exhibit varied  phytophysiognomies that generally fall into three basic vegetation types: grassland, shrubland,  and forest. Despite the growing body of scientific literature on the flora of Brazilian restingas,  a lack of systematization regarding this knowledge remains evident. To address this gap, we  compiled scientific publications from virtual libraries with the aim of: 1) Accessing available  knowledge regarding the floristics and phytosociology of Brazilian restingas; 2) Producing a  catalog of plant species found in Brazilian restingas based on floristic lists, in order to  document scientific names and report the most common species; 3) Generating and making  available to the scientific community a database of occurrence records for plant species in  Brazilian restingas; and 4) Understanding the floristic relationships among Brazilian restingas  and with adjacent biogeographic domains. To achieve these objectives, we organized the  research for this thesis into four chapters. The results indicated that the majority of scientific  publications stem from studies conducted in the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil and  that the five botanical families with the highest species richness in restinga ecosystems are  Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Poaceae, Asteraceae, and Rubiaceae. We found that phytosociological  studies lacked a standardized sampling methodology, likely due to the complexity of restinga  environments. In the Catalog of Restinga Species, we compiled 3960 phanerogam species,  1143 genera and 186 botanical families. We also created the SANBRA (Sandy Coastal  Ecosystems of Brazil) database, featuring a sample of over 100 coastal locations in Brazil.  This database represents the flora found in published floristic and phytosociological lists  regarding Brazilian restingas, covering all restinga phytophysiognomies. SANBRA compiles  over 18.000 plant records from Brazil's restinga ecosystems, with the most frequently  occurring species being Anacardium occidentale, Guapira opposita, Eugenia punicifolia,  Tapirira guianensis and Ipomoea pes-caprae. As for Phytogeography, we observe a diverse  Brazilian restinga ecosystem, characterized by regional particularities and a distinct floristic  identity. Furthermore, we note a significant floristic influence from the Atlantic Forest on the  species composition of restingas. Finally, we highlight the need for further research on  restingas, particularly in light of increasing human impact on Brazil's coastal regions.

Abstract: Sea turtles are long-lived organisms widely distributed in coastal environments and are recognized as important models for studies of environmental contamination, especially by persistent pollutants such as metals. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate trace metal concentrations in four species of sea turtles, as well as to identify the main biological, ecological, and environmental factors influencing the levels of these metals in these species. To achieve this, considering that these animals are threatened with extinction, priority was given to the use of non-invasive methods, such as the use of carapace fragments, and, whenever possible, tissues from dead individuals were also used. Concentrations of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) were quantified in four species of sea turtles found along the northeastern Brazilian coast: Chelonia mydas, Eretmochelys imbricata, Caretta caretta, and Lepidochelys olivacea. Bioaccumulation patterns were associated with feeding habits in two of the four species, investigated through stable isotope analysis of carbon (¹³C) and nitrogen (¹⁵N), in addition to the evaluation of morphological data and estimation of life stage. No significant differences in metal concentrations were observed among sampling areas for each species, when comparisons were possible, suggesting the absence of spatial variation in the evaluated regions. Therefore, samples from northeastern Brazil were consolidated as a single analytical unit for each species. Cu concentrations differed among species, with C. caretta showing the highest values and L. olivacea the lowest. Cd was predominantly below the detection limit and showed no interspecific differences. For Pb, C. mydas presented the highest concentrations, differing significantly from E. imbricata. Zn was the most abundant metal in the carapace and showed the greatest segregation among species, with higher values in C. caretta and L. olivacea. Significant interspecific differences were confirmed for Cu, Pb, and Zn. In the tissue analysis of C. mydas, Zn showed the highest concentrations, with no significant differences among tissues, suggesting homeostatic regulation of this element in the organism. Cu showed higher concentrations in the liver, with significant differences compared to the other tissues, reflecting its physiological role and participation in metabolic processes. Cd showed higher concentrations in the liver and kidney, associated with the formation of complexes with metallothioneins in these organs, which are involved in detoxification processes. Pb showed relatively similar concentrations among tissues, with a significant difference only between the carapace and muscle. Overall, the results indicate that variations in trace metal concentrations in sea turtles from northeastern Brazil reflect bioaccumulation patterns modulated by physiological and ecological characteristics of the species. These findings contribute to expanding knowledge about metal dynamics in these organisms and reinforce the importance of monitoring these species to better understand environmental contamination in marine ecosystems.
