Autor(es): Lima, Pedro Igor de Sousa
Abstract: This work investigates the relationship between the concept of the uncanny (Unheimliche), present in Freudian psychoanalysis theory, and narrative studies with focus on the work of
Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda. The overall objective of this research is to examine
the applicability of the uncanny as an aesthetic effect experienced in the film Monster (2023). The hypothesis is that the film uses a four-act narrative structure originally from the Eastern
Asian tradition, known in Japan as kishotenketsu, to produce catalysis through unfamiliarity. The work presents a theoretical framework on the metaphysics of narrative structures, including the four-act structure, and unfamiliarity as in Freud (1919). The works of Fonseca
(2019) and Harnercker (2025) support significantly the foundations of an ontology of
narratives, as well as the works of Arnavas & Bellini (2023) and Alzhanov et al (2024) give a
panoramic view on the kishotenketsu structure. The method of analysis was a poetic analysis
of the film's narrative structure, seeking the strategies used to produce aesthetic effects and
catharsis. The results of the investigation support that the uncanny as an aesthetic effect can
be appreciated in Monster (2023) through the relationships established between the filmic
elements present in the narrative, in addition the results point to questions related to the
ontology of the four-act structure and the uncanny as a methodological paradigm in queer.

Abstract: This qualitative study aims to understand the representation of women journalists in cinema
through a critical analysis of two films: Up Close & Personal (1996) and Morning Glory (2010).
The study seeks to investigate how the protagonists' actions within the narratives construct
symbolic meanings about journalistic practice and the identity of women journalists. The
research is grounded in a sociocultural perspective and is conducted through a bibliographical
survey and analysis of the selected cinematographic works. The films were chosen because they
feature journalists as central characters and allow for the observation of continuities and
transformations in the way women are represented in the profession, considering different
historical contexts. The theoretical framework of the work is anchored in cultural and
communication studies, especially the contributions of Stuart Hall (2016), Edgar Morin (1977),
and Christopher Vogler (2006), as well as contributions from feminist thought focused on the
critique of gender representations in the media field. The results indicate that, even in situations
of protagonism, women remain subordinate to the male presence in their narratives, revealing
that patriarchal logic still structures the way these characters are symbolically constructed.

Abstract: The book “Under the Weight of Iron: The Collapse of Mining in Quiterianópolis” investigates
the social, environmental, economic, and health impacts caused by the operations of the
mining company Globest Participações LTDA in the municipality of Quiterianópolis (Ceará,
Brazil). The research is based on a qualitative methodology, using interviews, field
observation, and documentary and bibliographic analysis, combining literary, investigative,
and environmental journalism. The work reveals how promises of progress and job creation
gave way to soil degradation, water contamination, air pollution, and the illness of the local
population, including cases of respiratory diseases and cancer. It also highlights the omission
of public institutions, the absence of prior environmental impact studies, and the denial of the
right to reparation for the affected communities. The book aims to serve as a tool for memory,
denunciation, and critical reflection on the limits of extractive development in the Brazilian
semi-arid region.

Abstract: The book “A Love Built: the Joys and Sorrows of the Fat Woman” investigates the lived
experiences of fat women, analyzing how fatphobia impacts their self-esteem, accessibility,
careers, and romantic relationships. The text presents the idea that fat women’s self-esteem is
inherently social, making their bodies a determinant of exclusion and stigma. Through the
analysis of the narratives of Helena Vieira (a fat transgender woman), Paula Mello (a fat and
lesbian woman), and Camila Hilário (a Black, fat, and bisexual woman), the research
explores the intersectionality of prejudices that deepen marginalization. The findings reveal
that self-love and the sharing of experiences are essential for building new ways of existing
with dignity and pleasure.
