Abstract: Estuaries and their environmental dynamics in tropical regions of low rainfall and high rates of evaporation are important ecosystems for sustainable development. This study aims evaluate and correlate Chlorophyll a with environmental parameters in a tropical hypersaline estuary (Piranji River, Northeast Brazil). Water samples were collected on the surface and the bottom at three collection stations, bimonthly in 2015. Chlorophyll a concentration was measured by spectrophotometry. Data from depth, salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH and nutrients were recorded also. Rainfall data, obtained from FUNCEME, revealed a rainfall level of 902 mm in the studied period, falling below the historical average for the region. The euphotic zone varied from 0.8 to 4.1 m depth; temperature varied from 25.6 to 29°C and salinity varied from mesohaline to hyperaline. During dry period, the estuary was characterized by inverse and hypersalinity. DO concentrations were between 3.1 and 6.6 μg.L-1; pH remained alkaline, revealing the marine influence; nitrite values ranged from undetectable values to 2.85 ± 0.1 μmol.L-1; nitrate ranged from undetectable values to 3,5 ± 0,1 μmol.L-1; ammoniacal nitrogen ranged from 0.8 ± 0.4 to 40 ± 0.1 μmol.L-1; orthophosphate ranged from 0.1 ± 0.1 to 3.2 ± 0.0 μmol.L-1; silicate ranged from 4.7 ± 0.3 to 98.0 ± 0.5 μmol.L-1; phytoplanktonic biomass ranged from 1.0 ± 0.4 to 42.9 ± 2.2 mg.m-3 and feofitine ranged from 0.9 ± 0.1 to 22.2 ± 1.4, what indicated a mesotrophic environment close to the river mouth and hypereutrophic at continental collection stations. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed temporal variations of Chlorophyll a correlated positively with salinity and negative with Total Inorganic Nitrogen (TIN) and precipitation. Spatial variations of phytoplankton biomass were positively correlated with silica, orthophosphate, phaeophytin and temperature and negative with euphotic zone and DO. These results are an overview of the environmental dynamics of an ecosystem under severe water deficit caused by precipitation anomalies and local impacts
