Abstract

This study tries to understand the motives which led the educator Joaquim Moreira de Sousa, Director of Public Instruction in the State of Ceará, to abandon, not only the position he occupied in 1934, but also the city of Fortaleza itselj, to begin his professional life in Rio de Janeiro. It shows how the struggle for a vancancy for a professorship in the Pedro II High School terminated a polítical conflict that went much further than mere personal quarrels.
